Premature Ejaculation

Premature ejaculation refers to male sexual dysfunctions that result in early ejaculation of semen. It usually happens before or immediately after penetration during intercourse. This condition can be distressing for both partners and diminishes sexual satisfaction. Fortunately, it is treatable. Premature ejaculation is a prevalent sexual dysfunction among men. Research indicates that about 30% to 40% of men encounter it at some point in their lives. Moreover, approximately one in five men aged between 18 and 59 have reported experiencing it.

What time frame medically defines a man’s ejaculation as premature?

Premature ejaculation is a condition that involves the onset of ejaculation occurring earlier than desired, causing distress to either partner during sexual intercourse. The Urological Association has defined premature ejaculation, but it may vary depending on individual preferences. By the Psychiatric Association, premature ejaculation can be classified into three levels of severity, ranging from mild to severe based on the time of ejaculation. The mild category includes ejaculation within one minute of sexual activity. Additionally, personal perceptions of what constitutes premature ejaculation should also be taken into account.

What causes premature ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation can be caused by physical, chemical, or emotional/psychological factors. Here are some examples:

Physical and chemical factors:
  • 1. Erectile dysfunction.
  • 2. Hormonal issues with oxytocin, LH, prolactin, or TSH.
  • 3. Low levels of serotonin or dopamine, chemicals in the brain that affect sexual desire and excitement.
  • 4. An overly sensitive penis.

These factors can contribute to premature ejaculation, so it's important to seek help from a healthcare provider if you are experiencing this problem.

Emotional or psychological causes include:

Feeling nervous or stressed, having problems with your partner, or feeling sad can all lead to difficulties in the bedroom. These emotional or psychological factors can include:

  • 1. Performance anxiety: feeling worried or nervous about sex, especially if it's with a new partner or after a long break.
  • 2. Stress: feeling overwhelmed by life's demands and pressures.
  • 3. Relationship problems: having issues with your partner, such as communication problems or conflicts.
  • 4. Depression: feeling sad, hopeless, or unmotivated for an extended period.
